Chris Stovern and Nate Nelson, pole vaulters for Northwestern High School, were overjoyed with their practice site Wednesday afternoon. The sky was clear, the air was warm and the Tigers were preparing for the WIAA Division 2 state track meet in the parking lot of Iron River Elementary School.
“This here, is a lot better than what we’ve had,” said Nelson, a sophomore.
“What we’ve had has been inside the gym. Being out here is great,” Stovern said.
When members of the Spartan track team competed in the WIAA Division 1 state meet last season, everyone wanted to know one thing: “Where’s Superior?”
This year, five more students from Superior High School will participate in the state meet, and they are prepared to help competitors brush up on their Wisconsin geography.
The Superior High School gymnastics team concluded its season in Rice Lake Feb. 23 at the WIAA Division 1 sectional meet. A total of nine teams competed in the event.
“Unfortunately, we had no one advance to state,” said Lynda Ritsche, manager of the SHS team.
University of Wisconsin-Superior’s Grady Milesko won the long jump competition at UW-Stout’s Warren Bowlus Invite Saturday with a mark of 21-feet-11, and then later in the day lowered his school record in the 55-meter dash during preliminaries with a time of 6.70 seconds.
The Superior High School gymnastics team competed in the Hudson Invitational on Saturday with eight other teams.
