Disfunction won’t solve budget woes
The top candidates vying to succeed Gov. Jim Doyle in the November election all say that further cuts of some kind in state employee staffing and compensation are on the table. One candidate, Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker, has gone the farthest, calling for major changes in the highly regarded Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS). However, Walker’s pension rhetoric evades reason.By By Mark Klipstein , July 23, 2010

Symbolic of Bush economics
To the Telegram: I find it amusing and I am not at all surprised that the Republican Party is opening their campaign office at a shuttered bank right next to a Super Walmart. It is symbolic of the failed Republican economic policies that led us to the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.July 23, 2010
State needs new leaders
To the Telegram: We all pay taxes to the state of Wisconsin. How is it that we have a $6 billion plus deficit? Perhaps the answer lies in the fact that Gov. Jim Doyle and the Democratic leadership in this state have the same agenda Washington and the federal legislature has – spend all the money – run up a debt – deplete the reserves; pay the minimum balance due in what we owe – Does this practice sound familiar?July 23, 2010

Why should God bless America
To the Telegram:
God Bless America!
Almost all political speeches end with that incantation. It is a pleasant thought. A rallying cry! A song we sing with fervor! Yes, God bless America! And why not? God is on our side isn’t He?

Taxpayers get burned as audit committee fiddles
The Legislative Audit Committee wasted taxpayer’s time and money on July 14. The committee approved three audits – two for busy work and one of some importance. It makes you wonder why protecting your pocketbooks and promoting good, efficient government are so unimportant.
Ask the Democrats.

Honor Flight gives once-in-a-lifetime memories for WWII veterans
Perhaps one of the greatest programs to honor World War II veterans, which has been noted by the media periodically but not often enough, is the Honor Flight Network.

Statewide smoking ban fair for all
Tim Moen doesn’t mince words.
A smoking ban passed in Marshfield in 2008 – one similar to the statewide ban that just took effect and that some politicians are already talking about rescinding – was a “crippling kick in the” pants, he said.

Russian roulette unwise
To the Telegram:
Today June 22, I heard Louisiana Governor Jindal blame the government for not doing enough about the oil leak crisis in the gulf. When we hear such criticism aimed at the Obama administration we would do well to remember that the President’s decision to allow off shore drilling was made in order to woo Republicans to support future environmental legislation.

An almost unremarked blessing of modern America is that food is incredibly cheap.

Wisconsinites are honest but those other guys ...
We Wisconsinites have a reputation that – as surely as our oversized bellies – precedes us.

Show respect for nation’s flag, freedom
To the Telegram:
What a shame, one day after our most honored day for men and women – past, present and future. It happened sometime in the early hours of July 5. The Salvation Army’s flagpole was bent in half at the base of the pole, where it is stronger and countersunk for strength in the ground and the flag was on the ground. To see this disrespect made me so angry.
