Even to the untrained eye, as last week’s Germann Road fire still smoldered, a pattern was obvious: Of those cabins and homes that burned, many were tucked tight into the forest. Of those nearby that still stood when the smoke cleared, many had large, open yards.
The largest forest fire to hit Wisconsin in three decades has been contained. The fire began in Gordon on Tuesday afternoon and traveled more than eight miles into Barnes and Highland, gobbling up 8,131 acres and destroying 47 structures.
A day after a wildfire consumed nearly 9,000 acres and 47 structures in Douglas County, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, in conjunction with the National Weather Service, has announced that a Red Flag Warning is in effect today in Florence and Marinette counties and all DNR burning permits suspended statewide today.
Wildfire crews from the Department of Natural Resources, working through the night and joined by more than one hundred municipal firefighters, have largely surrounded the Germann Road Fire, which has scorched 8,700 acres of forestland in Douglas and Bayfield counties.
Tuesday’s high fire danger alert for nearly half of the state turned into a real emergency when a massive wildfire ignited in Douglas County, forcing the evacuations of several communities, the destruction of at least 50 structures while burning about 6,800 acres.

A wildfire was reported southwest of Barnes in Douglas County and is reported to have burned 3,500 acres and several structures, and is still growing, according to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
So far, not injuries have been reported.
When the rocket arced up from the Vietnamese jungle and hit the U.S. helicopter, Merlin Raye Allen took the brunt of the blast. He was killed, but in the process he saved his best friend and fellow Marine, Jeff Savelkoul.
