Carol Jean Longtine, 82, of Hayward, Wis., passed away Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013 at Water's Edge Care Center, after a brief illness.
Carol was born Nov. 24, 1930 in Duluth to Merle and Minnie (Wold) Berger. She graduated from Superior Central High School, joined the St. Luke's Hospital nursing program, and graduated with her R.N. degree in 1952. On June 13, 1953, she married Robert Longtine, also of Superior. They moved to Hayward in 1959, where Bob began his teaching career. When youngest son David started kindergarten, Carol resumed her nursing work at Hayward Area Memorial Hospital and its nursing home. Carol cared for years for her aging mother, then later for her husband, Bob. The care she gave exemplified who she was: patient, kind and selfless.
When Bob retired from teaching, they enjoyed traveling to Arizona, Gulf Shores of Alabama, and Hawaii. After Bob's death in 1997, she continued to spend a few months each year in Gulf Shores where she connected with old friends, many from the Superior area, and new friends. Carol's favorite things, after family and friends, were swimming, bridge, golf, the Packers, visits to the casino, and chocolate.
She is survived by five children, Laurie Longtine (Steve Schmuki), Waukesha Wis., Linda (Scott) Lundberg, Hayward, Wis. Steve (Jodi) Longtine Hayward, Paula Chisser (Mark Helander), Hayward, Wis., David Longtine, Iowa City Iowa; eight grandchildren, four great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends, friends, friends. Carol charmed everyone she met, and made new friends all through her life. Once you were her friend, she kept up with you.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, husband Robert, brother, William, and son-in-law, Cary Chisser.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in Carol's name to the American Red Cross, Alzheimer's Association, (local chapters) and First Lutheran Church.
A service to honor Carol's life was held at First Lutheran Church in Hayward Wis. on Tuesday, September 24, 2013. Pastor Scott Ludford officiated.
