Tyne A. Ekstrom, 95, passed away June 16, 2013 at the Northern Lights Health Care Center in Washburn, Wis.
She was born Nov. 9, 1917 in Oulu, Wis., daughter of the late Oscar and Hilma (Wiitala) Karna.
On Nov. 23, 1935, Tyne married Edward A. Ekstrom, in Duluth. They lived most of their married life on the Oulu farm where Tyne was born and raised. She supported farm operations while raising their five children. She also worked for a time at the Iron River Fish Pole Factory. She was a faithful member of the Hope Lutheran Church in Oulu where she had been the Sunday School superintendent, and spent many years active in the church ladies' Martha Circle. With failing eye sight, Tyne completed a Finnish to English translation of the original early church secretarial minutes written by her father, Oscar Karna. During her last years in Washburn, her pastor recorded all the Sunday services which were delivered to her faithfully and provided much listening comfort.
Tyne was a loving and nurturing mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and a loyal friend to many. Children always provided her great joy. She appreciated nature and had dear pets. She enjoyed crocheting, ceramics, and knitting with her friends She also loved visiting with family and special friends while drinking coffee around the kitchen table or through extended telephone chats. Enjoyable travel experiences included visits to see her son in Arizona, her daughter and family in Kenosha, Wis., two Finland trips to connect with relatives, Palm Springs, Calif. with her sisters, Alabama with her brother, and an Arizona visit with her sister. Tyne exemplified Finnish SISU and was a gentle lady who will be remembered for her kindness and faithful trust in God.
She will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her surviving children, Kenneth (Alice) Ekstrom, Joanne (Stephen) Relich, Carole (Mark) Hoefling, and Kathleen Stock; 13 grandchildren, Arnold (Barbara) Koopman, Keith Relich, Edwin Koopman, Mark (Autumne) Relich, Elizabeth (Michael) Renner, Jeffery (Jeanne) Hoefling, Michael (Sarah) Relich, Richard (Melissa) Hoefling, Eric (Diana) Relich, Aaron (Sara) Hoefling, Zachary (Meghan) Swanson, Hannah (Matt Slye) Swanson, and Lucas (Loralee) Swanson; her 21 great grandchildren; as well as many nieces, nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward; her son, Lawrence; and sons-in-law, Thomas Swanson and Michael Stock; siblings, Waino, Aili and Albert Karna who died in infancy and childhood; brothers, John Karna and U.Oscar Karna; sisters, Hilma Karna Hammitt and Laura Karna Tyykila.
Visitation will be held from 12:30 p.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral service Saturday, June 22 at Hope Lutheran Church, in Oulu, Wis., with Rev. Scott Stai officiating. Burial will take place at the Pine Glade Cemetery in Oulu.
