Elizabeth ("Pete" Nedland) McConnell 92, of Minong, Wis. died on Thursday May 2, 2013 at the Spooner Health System Hospital in Spooner, Wis.
She was born Sept. 1, 1920, the fourth of 11 children in rural Glen Flora, Wis. to William Rufus Howard and Gertrud Angell Howard. Elizabeth attended one room country schools, but graduated from Tony High School. She attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison for two years and graduated from MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill. with a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics.
Elizabeth married Victor E. Nedland on Dec. 25, 1945 and they lived in Ladysmith, Wis. where Vic owned Vic's Rod and Gun Shop. They had six boys, enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, and the great outdoors. Elizabeth was active in Cub Scouts, 4-H, PTA, Extension Homemakers Clubs. She first became President of Rusk County Homemakers Clubs and eventually President of the state of Wisconsin. Vic passed away on Sept. 6, 1969. Elizabeth and two sons moved to Superior where Elizabeth became the University of Wisconsin Extension County Home Economist.
She married Karl O. McConnell on April 17, 1982 in Superior and acquired two step daughters. Elizabeth and Karl enjoyed their combined eight adult children and growing numbers of grandchildren. They greatly enjoyed expanding Karl's collection of antique surveying equipment, more than doubling his world class collection. They traveled extensively. They moved to Rice Lake, Wis. in 2004, and Karl passed away on June 24, 2006. Elizabeth moved in with Paul and Fawn Nedland in spring of 2007 and was joined by her brother Don Howard in 2008.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and sisters, two husbands, Victor and Karl.
She is survived by her six sons, Jack and Jeri, Dan and Rhonda, Fred and Carol, Paul and Fawn, Sam and Sonja, and Joe and PJ Nedland. She is also survived by her two step daughters, Collin and Bob Christenson and Molly and Jeff Paulson, and by 27 grandchildren and numerous precious great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life service was held at The River Church, west of Minong, Wis. on Wednesday May 8.
