Edward H. Rutledge, 78, formerly of Superior, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2013, after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Ed was born on July 27, 1934, to J. Edward and Florence (Blackmore) Rutledge in Lookout, Pa.
Ed graduated from Honesdale High School, Pa.. in 1951, and from Norwich University, a military college in Vermont, with a degree in civil engineering in 1955. Immediately following his college graduation, Ed came to work for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. He worked for the department for 38 years, retiring as Chief Construction Engineer of District 8 in Superior in 1993. During his career, Ed played an integral role in many projects, including the construction of the Blatnik and Bong Bridges. Ed also served in the Army Reserve from 1957 until 1965, when he was honorably discharged as a Captain. Ed relocated to Leesburg, Fla. in 1995 and enjoyed many years of golf, one of his favorite pastimes. Ed also enjoyed skiing, fishing, bowling, genealogy and playing poker with friends. Ed was a wonderful father and grandfather and will be deeply missed.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Edward J. Rutledge in 2009.
Ed is survived by his wife, Mary of Leesburg, Fla.; his daughter, Cherie (Will) Rossing of Superior; two grandchildren, Tom Hinkle and Mollie Rossing both of Superior; sister, Nancy Bonnetti of Honesdale, Pa.; aunt Alice Foster of Lake Ariel, Pa.; four nieces, Robin Belford, Kim Trainor, Chris-Ellen Taylor and Tami Rasera, all of New Jersey; brother-in-law Dan (Phyllis) Durand; step-children Craig (Kathy) Amundson of Menominee Falls and Terri (Troy) Picton of Dairyland; several cousins and many friends.
Memorial gatherings will be held in Leesburg, Fla. and Honesdale, Pa.
