Donald William Johnson, 83, Duluth, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2013, with his family by his side.
Don was born on May 21, 1929, to Gustave and Florence Johnson. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War serving in Japan. He sailed the Great Lakes for 17 years then came ashore to be with his wife and children. He became a marine surveyor for 27 years with the American Bureau of Shipping and had a life time of being a great guy to all who he came in contact with.
Don treasured the family camping vacations when the kids were young, traveling from California to Canada in a pop up camper. He cherished his family and friends and enjoyed entertaining them down in the “swamp.” If you were lucky enough to get a weekend “up at the shack” you were truly blessed.
Don also did volunteer work for many years as he was a proud member of the Shriners, Masonic Temple and Euclid Lodge. Don will be sorely missed and was loved by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gustave and Florence; daughter Katherine; brothers, Gus and Wally and sister Evelyn Spirlong.
Don is survived by his wife of 51 years Betty Ann Johnson (Martin); daughter Janice (John) Royer; son, Richard (Jodie); sister-in-law, Margaret Johnson and his grandchildren; great-grandchild and many nieces, nephews, friends and his extended family at “adult dare care.”
Visitation will be held from 10 until the 11 a.m. memorial service on Saturday, April 6, in Elim Lutheran Church, 6101 Cody St., Duluth. Services entrusted to Cremation Society of Minnesota 624-5200
