Dorothy Ann Thompson, 81, of Duluth and formerly a longtime resident of Superior died Friday, March 15, 2013 in Solvay Hospice House, Duluth.

Dorothy Ann Thompson, 81, of Duluth and formerly a longtime resident of Superior died Friday, March 15, 2013 in Solvay Hospice House, Duluth after a courageous 40 year battle with diabetic complications.

She was born Oct. 25, 1931 in Superior to Oscar and Alva (Schuning) Swenson. As an infant, Dorothy and her family moved to Hayward until the death of her father; then the family moved back to Superior when she was 11 years old. In 2007 she moved to Duluth.

Dorothy had been employed for 13 years by the Bridgeview Motor Inn as head housekeeper.

Dorothy was a member of the United Presbyterian Church and a life member of Superior T.O.P.S.

She is survived by two sons, Thomas (Sharon) Thompson of Wheaton Ill. and James Thompson of Superior; a daughter, Kathy (Craig) Franklin of Superior; two grandchildren, Jack and Erin Thompson; two step-grandchildren, Erica and Adam Franklin; seven step-great-grandchildren; two nieces and a nephew; a special friend, Donald Hansen; and her lifetime and recent friends at Keystone Bluffs.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Tom on Jan. 10, 1999; a brother, Ernest; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Tom and Ida Thompson; and a sister-in-law, Mary.

Dorothy's family would like to thank the caring staff at Keystone Bluffs Assisted Living for the excellent care their Mom received during her six years of residency with them. They also want to express their gratitude for the gentle loving care provided by the staff of Solvay Hospice House for the last 13 days of her life.

Her memorial service was held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the United Presbyterian Church with Rev. Joel Huenemann officiating. Inurnment will take place in Riverside Cemetery.

Downs Funeral Home, corner of Ogden Ave. and 19th St. is assisting the family with arrangements. If desired, memorials in her name may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
