Dennis William Peterson, 87, of Whitehall, Wis., died on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013 in Saint Mary's Hospital in Duluth.
Dennis William Peterson, 87, of Whitehall, Wis., died on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013 in Saint Mary's Hospital in Duluth.
Dennis was born on Jan. 12, 1926 in Bruce Valley, Wis. to Svend John and Emma Theoline (Andreason) Peterson.
He graduated from the Whitehall Memorial High School and proudly served his country in the United States Army, 232nd. Infantry Company L, Rainbow Division, which liberated the Dachau Prison Camp. He walked extensively through Austria, Italy and Germany. His travels continued with Gloria Marie Swenson, who became his life-long partner on May 29, 1953 in Mason City, Iowa. Dennis and Gloria loved dancing, bowling and attending sporting events together. They enjoyed annual vacations at Pine Point Lodge on Eagle Lake outside of Iron River, Wis. and often traveled to Las Vegas and bingo halls and casinos in Wisconsin. Their other favorite destinations include Lake Tahoe, the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, Coeur d' Alene, Ind. and anywhere their grandchildren were.
Dennis is survived by his children, Emily and John. His son, Daniel, was only in his life for a few days. Other family members include, Emily Ringlien of Homer, Alaska, Andrew Hoyer (Soren and Aastah) of Anchor Point, Alaska, Amanda Ringlien of Sacramento, Calif., Melissa Ringlien (Douglas Herring, Devan, Daris and Darian, Calynne and Kyler Dupius, Halle, Harbor and Honor Herring) of Wittman Ariz., Karleigh Ringlien (Frank and Owen Frederick Busch) of Madison, Wis., Joshua Ringlien (Mary Christine and Hayden Larson) of LaCrosse, Wis., John (Casey) Peterson, Anna Hattenberger (Ava and Hazel) J.P. Peterson and fiancée Sarah (Halle and Liam), Matthew (Amanda) Peterson (Lily and Daniel) all of Superior; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Dennis was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria, on Dec. 3, 2009 and six siblings, Lucille, Doris, Edna, Lilly, Sidney and Gordon.
Dennis was a devout Christian. Friends may call one hour prior to his 1 p.m. funeral service on Friday, Jan. 25 in Our Saviour's Lutheran Church with burial in the Lincoln Cemetery both in Whitehall, Wis. Rev. Kris Fahey will officiate. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Hutchins-Stendahl American Legion Post No. 191.
The Jack Funeral Home in Whitehall is assisting the family with arrangements.
