Edith C. Johnson, 93, of Hayward, Wis., passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013.

Edith C. Johnson, 93, of Hayward, Wis., passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, at Water’s Edge Care Center, Hayward.

Edith Caroline was born Dec. 1, 1919, in Ashland, Wis., the daughter of Joseph and Anna (Vocelka) Bradle. She was raised in Ashland and graduated salutatorian from St. Agnes High School. She worked at her parent’s grocery store in Ashland all through high school. Edith was joined in marriage to William D. Johnson on Nov. 23, 1942, when they eloped to Carlton, Minn. In addition to raising her children, Edith worked side-by-side helping Bill in the office of the businesses he started, including the St. Croix Corporation and Brule Corporation that manufactured fishing rods. Edith and Bill moved to Hayward, Wis., in 1978. Edith was a member of the Hayward Lioness Club, Hayward Garden Club, PEO Sisterhood, Ladies Golf League, and volunteered for the American Birkebeiner. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hayward, served as Welcome Wagon Lady in Superior and was an active bowler well into her 80s. Edith will be remembered by her family and friends as a fun loving person who enjoyed spending her time with others.

Edith is survived by her two children, William “Butch” (Patricia) Johnson of Hayward, Claudia (James) Johnson-Sorbel of New Brighton, Minn.; nine grandchildren, William (Tali), Phillip (Jennifer), Derrick (Jill), Rebecca (Brian), Aaron (Natalie), Ashlee (Bennett), Zachary (Jackie), James and Anjelica; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; eight sisters and two brothers.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church with the Very Rev. Phil Juza officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the Mass at church. Interment will be at the Greenwood Cemetery, Hayward.
