Helen M. Skandel, 85, of Superior died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013.

Helen M. Skandel, 85, of Superior died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, at St. Francis Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Helen was born in Superior on Dec. 27, 1927, the daughter of Sophie and Steve Mihalik. She graduated from Central High School in 1946.

She married Raymond “Ray” J. Skandel on Feb. 14, 1953, at Holy Assumption Church, and they celebrated 57 years together until his death April 15, 2010.

After high school, she worked for the East End Bank, then for the 1st National Bank, and later she worked for the Twin Ports Dairy until her retirement. She was a member of Holy Assumption Catholic Church, the Teamsters Union and the Garden Club No. 12.

Helen enjoyed gardening and doing crafts, especially painting and ceramics. She volunteered for the Holy Assumption Senior Lunch Program. She loved to watch the wild birds in her yard and traveling with Ray. Most important to her was her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father; her stepmother, Helen Mihalik, her husband, Ray; brother, James Mihalik; and nephews, Scott Zelma and Jeffrey Mihalik; and many uncles, aunts and cousins.

Helen is survived by her stepsister, Betty Peterson of Superior; stepbrother, Edward Zelma of Superior; sister-in-law, Phyllis Mihalik of Superior; nieces, Paula and Lisa; and many other nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15 Holy Assumption Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. Ronald Olson as celebrant. Visitation will begin one hour prior. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

If desired memorial in Helen’s name may be made to Holy Assumption Catholic Church.

The family would like to thank St. Francis in the Park for the wonderful care they provided Helen in her final years.
