Bernice L. (Hughes) Schaffer, 84, of Superior, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
Bernice L. (Hughes) Schaffer, 84, of Superior, died Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
She was born April 24, 1928, in Superior, daughter of Swan and Agnes (Joswiak) Swanson.
Bernice was a 1946, graduate of Superior Central High School.
Some of her many interests included playing cards, reading, watching professional wrestling, feeding birds and squirrels, and spending time outdoors. Her family remembers her love of family, God and country.
Bernice worked as a S.P.D. crossing guard at Baxter and Belknap, in front of Cathedral of Christ the King church.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and brother, Johnny Swanson.
Survivors include her daughters, Loretta "Laurie" (Howard) Peterson, Duluth, and Laura "Penny" (Tony) Aydt, Superior; four grandchildren, Chris, Jesse, Tony and Tashina; five great-grandchildren, Olivia, Nolan, Alex, Kiana and Carson; step-sons, Donald Schaffer and Pinky Schaffer; and nephew, William "Skip" Scott, Apple Valley, Minn.
The visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. service, Wednesday, Jan. 9, at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior.
