Norman O. Smith

Norman O. Smith, of Everett Wash. passed away on Dec. 21, 2012, at age 92.

Norm was born in Superior, Wis. on Feb. 23, 1920, to parents George Morley and Harriet Nielsen Smith. He graduated from Superior Central High School in 1937, and the University of Minnesota in 1943, where he received a degree in business administration. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity.

Norm was an Officer in the United States Navy during WW11. After attending Naval Reserve Midshipmen's School at Northwestern University and receiving anti-submarine warfare training in Florida, he served in the Pacific Theater for three years as Skipper of submarine chasers PC-1080 and PC-1245.

Norm married Betty Sylvia Slater in 1948, and they raised their family in Everett Washington. Betty passed away the month Norm retired and in 1991, he married Marjorie Kafer. He often said, "I got lucky twice."

Banking and the financial world were in Norm's blood. In 1929, Norm's grandfather, Oliver Wattles Smith, was on the Board of Directors of Community Savings Bank in Superior Wisconsin, using his own personal assets to keep the bank afloat following the stock market crash of 1929. In 1951, Norm's father, G. Morley Smith, was on the Board of Directors of the same bank.

Norm began his own career in the financial world as a CPA in 1947. In 1948, he joined Dean Witter as a stock broker and six years later he established the Everett Branch of Dean Witter & Co. Norm was a stockbroker for 25 years before putting his experiences and skills to work as a Trust Investment Officer at Olympic and Frontier banks.

Growing up in Superior, Norm became an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman. As Norm tells the story, he shot his first deer at age 11 when he and his big brother G. Morley Smith Jr. snuck away from a fancy affair where everyone was wearing "blacks, whites and satin" (including Norm and Morley). His family has many photographs of Norm grinning over platters heaped with brook trout. He loved traveling to Wisconsin for hunting and fishing trips with his brother and nephews.

Norm is survived by his three children, Dr. Terrilea Burnett of Honolulu, Hawaii, N. Jerald (Jerry) Smith of Freeland, Wash., Dr. Jana Kay Slater (Dr. Marc Braverman) of Corvallis, Ore. as well as three grandchildren, Tristan Burnett, Justin (Elka) Burnett, and Blair Braverman, three great-grandchildren. In Wisconsin, he is survived by nephews, great nephews and nieces, and step-siblings.

He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
