Helen Julia (Majeski) Carlson, 93, lifelong Superior resident died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012.

Helen Julia (Majeski) Carlson, 93, lifelong Superior resident died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, at Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center with her family by her side.

She was born Feb. 17, 1919, in Superior, to Vincent and Antoinette (Stankewicz) Majeski and lived on her beloved Connor’s Point for 92 years; the last year of her life was lived at Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center.

She graduated from the former Central High School in 1937.

Helen married Leonard “Smokey” Carlson on Oct. 15, 1938; and had five children.

She had been employed as a teacher’s assistant at Ericcson Elementary School, where she had a very special bond with all the children, until she retired.

Helen was a member of Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court 1190, the Wild Flower Garden Club, the North End Neighborhood Organization and she was a life member of the Superior PTA.

One of Helen’s greatest joys was baking a cake for Jim to take to the fire hall every shift he worked for 30 years.

She is survived by three daughters, Barbara (Tom) Meronek, Sparta, Wis., Pat Carlson, Lake Nebagamon, Judy (Dennis) Longshore, Poplar; one son, James (Lynda) Carlson, Superior; grandchildren, Michael (Karen) Meronek, Bend, Ore., Dale (Zwanda) Carlson, Bellvue, Neb., Sheri (Billy) Wernert, Logan, Ohio, Leah (Robert) Turell, San Diego, Calif., Kim (Pat Scott) Strang, Eagle Lake, Fla., Kevin (Lea) Johnson, Winter Haven Fla.; Charlie (Jennifer) Smith, Polk City, Fla., Dennis (Michelle) Longshore, San Jose, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Janet Carlson, Columbus, Ohio; 16 great-grandchildren, eight great great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard “Smokey”; her son, Lenard “Sam” Carlson; four brothers, John, Joe, Frank and James; and two sisters, Annette Ostazeski and Mary Homsey.

The Catholic Daughters will pray the rosary at 9:45 a.m. and visitation begins at 10 a.m. until the 11 Mass of Christian burial Saturday, Dec. 29 at Cathedral of Christ the King Catholic Church with Rev. Andrew Ricci as celebrant.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers for the service will be retired and active members of the Superior Fire Department. Any Firefighter's wishing to participate please gather at the church Saturday morning.

Helen’s family would like to thank the staff at Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center for their care and compassion during Helen’s stay.
