Dale Arthur Zahn, 82, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2012, at the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home.
He was born Feb. 8, 1930, in Minneapolis, to Arthur and Margaret Lindahl Zahn.
Dale married Patricia Tracy on Nov. 19, 1955, in Superior. They were married 57 wonderful years.
He was a Master Sergeant in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War.
Dale grew up and went to school in Superior. After his honorable discharge in 1971 from the Air Force, he moved to Utah.
He was a member of the Lutheran Church.
In his youth, he worked for Great Northern Railroad tearing down and rebuilding steam engines. He then joined the U.S. Air Force, and after 22 years of service, he was discharged. During his military years he worked as a surveyor on many projects. After he moved to Utah, he worked for Union Pacific Railroad until 1991. At the time of his retirement he was the project engineer for the installation of fiber optics adjacent to the Rail Road tracks.
Dale was an avid golfer, enjoyed watching golf on TV and loved to play golf with his buddies at Royal Greens Golf Course. Although he would not admit it, he was a skilled woodworker, who made tables, chairs and chests for family members. He loved watching his kids and grandkids play sports and other activities. During his youth he enjoyed all sports and played basketball, football and baseball. During his military career he continued to play baseball both in England and in Utah. In 1955, he played right field for Hill Air Force Base baseball team that won the Utah State Semi-Pro championship.
He is survived by his wife Patricia; children Paul (Paula) Zahn of Kaysville; Adele (James) Aadland of Layton; Mary Jo Chevalier of Cape Coral, Fla.; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters Karen Johnston of Sandpoint, Idaho and Sally Lavelle of Sherwood, Ore; and brother Gary Zahn of Blackduck, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his mother Margaret LaChance, stepfather John LaChance and brother Curtis LaChance.
The family would like to thank the George E. Wahlen Veterans Home and Bristol Hospice for their compassion, care and support.
Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14 at the Utah Veterans Memorial Park, 17111 S. Camp Williams Road, Bluffdale, Utah where military honors will be conducted by Hill Air Force Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to George E. Wahlen Ogden Veterans Home, 1102 N. 1200 W., Ogden, Utah 84404.
