Merton “Mert” L. Wedan, 86, longtime Lake Nebagamon and Poplar resident died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012.
Merton “Mert” L. Wedan, 86, longtime Lake Nebagamon and Poplar resident died Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at Middle River Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Dec. 25, 1925, in Superior, son of Lloyd and Anna (Larson) Wedan.
Merton was a 1943 graduate of Superior Central High School.
In the European Theater during WWII, Merton proudly served his country with the U.S. Army.
On Nov. 13, 1948, in Superior, Lillian Hemingson and Merton Wedan were united in marriage. Mert and Lillian were blessed with many happy years together, including several retirement years.
His career as a truck driver started with Keebler Corporation, then Indianhead Trucking and retired from Saratoga Liquor.
Some of his memberships included the VFW and American Legion.
Mert was an avid golfer and was a member of various golf leagues in the Superior, Poplar and Lake Nebagamon area.
He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and cheering for the Green Bay Packers.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife; and brothers, Dale and Duane Wedan.
Survivors include his sons, David (Wendy) Wedan, LaCrosse, Wis., Dennis (Julie) Wedan, Maple, and Steven (Sue) Wedan, Lake Nebagamon; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Leona (Pat) Moreland, Lake Nebagamon; brothers, John Wedan, Sun Prairie, Wis., and Paul (Dorothy) Wedan, Superior; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the noon service, Saturday, Dec. 15 at Mission Covenant Church, Poplar, with Rev. Darrell Nelson officiating. Military rites will follow the memorial service at the church.
Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th St., Superior, is assisting the family with arrangements.
