William Monberg, 96, of Superior, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2012 at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
William Monberg, 96, of Superior, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2012 at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth.
He was born March 17, 1916 in Winnepeg, Manitoba, son of John and Ane (Pedersen) Monberg.
Bill proudly served his country with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was decorated with the World War II Victory Medal with two Overseas Bars, the Battle Star, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. He later joined the VFW and American Legion and was on the first Honor Flight to Washington D.C. from Duluth.
As a machinist, Bill worked for the NP, GN/BN and DW&P railroads and retired from Superior Lidgerwood Mundy. Bill served as president of the local Machinists Union.
Some of his interests included upholstery, woodworking, painting, wine-making, cooking and spending time at the family cabin on Sand Lake in the Town of Barnes.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Helen M. (Nygren) Monberg in 1993; grandson, Brian Monberg; brothers, Gunnar, Hulgar, Joseph and Howard Monberg; and sisters, Hancene Johnson and Myrtle Johnson.
Survivors are his daughter, Marianne (Robert) Granquist, South Range; sons, William D. (Pat) Monberg, Stacy Minn. and Gary "Moby" Monberg, Superior; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, June Dye, Radisson, Wis.; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29 at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30 at the funeral home, with Rev. Mark A. Holmes officiating.
Burial with military rites accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post 435 will be at Graceland Cemetery, Superior.
Pallbearers will be Dale Zimmerman, Dean Granquist, William Monberg III, Herbert Turner, Barry Kilner and Robert Rampier.
