George R. Stephans, 68, of Iron River, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012.
George R. Stephans, 68, of Iron River, died Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2012, at Golden Living Center of Superior, following a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
He was born on April 8, 1944, in Superior to Lewis and Ingeborg (Engstrom) Stephans.
He graduated from Northwestern High School in Maple.
George served his country in the United States Army as a radio control operator stationed in Korea and then reenlisted for the Vietnam Conflict. After he served, George was a roofer by trade in the Milwaukee area until returning to Iron River.
He was a member of the Iron River VFW Post 10197, an avid Green Bay Packer fan and enjoyed the outdoors, fishing and hunting. He also loved spending time with his family and friends, watching old movies and listening to music, especially country and the oldies.
George is survived by five sons Ted Stephans, Wisconsin Dells, Wis., Brian Stephans, Rochester, Minn., Ryan Stephans, Minneapolis, Minn., Greg Stephans, Superior, Steven Stephans Ashland, Wis.; two sisters, Virginia Wanke, Sheboygan, Wis., Cheryl Slowinski, Iron River, five brothers, Harvey Hubbard, Barron, Wis., Richard (Roxy) Stephens, Seffner, Fla., Lee (Priscilla) Stephans, Union Grove, Wis., Dan (Karen) Stephans, Iron River, Jack (Sherry) Stephans, Racine, Wis.; one grandson, Riley Stephans and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Services will begin with a graveside committal service on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 12 p.m. Noon at the Iron River City Cemetery. The Iron River VFW Post 10197 and the Iron River American Legion Post will accord military honors.
A time of remembrance and a celebration of life will be held for George from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 10, at Carrigan's Bowling Alley, in Iron River.
Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
George's family would like to thank the staff at Golden Living Center, Essentia Health, Essentia Hospice Care and the Veteran's Administration for their support.
