Laurence "Larry" A. Ronning, Maple, Wis. died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at Essentia Health St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth, with his family by his side.
Laurence "Larry" A. Ronning, Maple, Wis. died Saturday, Oct. 6, 2012, at Essentia Health St. Mary's Medical Center, Duluth, with his family by his side.
He was born in Maple to John and Mary (Salomaki) Ronning.
He married his wife June on July 17, 1968, and celebrated 26 years of marriage before she was laid to rest in March 1995.
Larry served in the United States Coast Guard and the Merchant Marines. While in the Merchant Marines, Larry received Direct Enemy Action Campaign Ribbons for North Atlantic, Middle East, South Pacific, Mediterranean Theatres and Okinawa. He also received the Ribbon of Nation of Defense and the Good Conduct Medal for four years. While in the Merchant Marines he sailed as a fireman, oiler and wiper on the USS Golden Fleece, the William Eaton and several others. He was initiated in a Shellback Ceremony which is conducted when sailors cross the Equator.
He was a member of the Bong Hofstedt American Legion Post 409 of Poplar and a former member of American Legion Post 71. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, splitting firewood, gardening and farming. He also enjoyed watching sports but his greatest pleasure was spending time with his grandchildren.
He was previously employed as a utility worker for Consumer's Power in Flint, Mich. for over 30 years.
Larry owned and operated Hudy's Tavern in East End Superior for many years and found a great deal of satisfaction sharing time with friends and patrons.
Larry is survived by three sons, Jim (Becky Carlson) Ronning, Maple, Wis., Larry Ronning, Jr., Edward Ronning, Ohio; three daughters, Kathy Barr, Grand Blanc, Mich., Susan (Fred) Crew, Flushing, Mich., Julie Simmons, Flint, Mich.; eight grandchildren, Becky, Adrienne, Erika, Alex, Emily, Marc, Chantel, Tyler and one great-grandson, Ben.
In addition to his wife June, Larry was preceded in death by his parents and a brother George.
Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service on Friday, Oct. 12, at Zion Lutheran Church with Rev. Patrick Ziems, officiating. Burial will be in the Faith Lutheran Cemetery in Maple, Wis. with Rev. Charles Ells of Lakeside Baptist Church, officiating.
