Sigrid J. Levanpa, 92, Superior, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012 at the Golden Living of Superior.

Sigrid J. Levanpa, 92, Superior, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012 at the Golden Living of Superior.

She was born on July 7, 1920 in Maple to Nikolai and Martha (Lindgren) Wiinamaki.

She graduated from the former Central High School.

She was employed as an LPN at Superior Memorial Hospital, St. Mary's Hospital, Superior and the former Parkland Nursing Home. Prior to receiving her LPN license she was employed as a church secretary. Following her retirement from nursing, she was involved in the foster grandparent program at Cooper and Great Lakes elementary schools.

When her children were growing up she was involved with the PTA and was a cub scout den mother.

She enjoyed camping, singing, dancing, traveling, walking reading and bible studies. She also loved to bake bread and was known to make the best apple pies.

Sigrid was a longtime member of Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Pilgrim Lutheran Church Women and Pilgrim Lutheran Church choir. She was also a member of the "Ladies of Kaleva", the Jarvenpaa Chorus, Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and the Old Brule River Heritage Society.

Sigrid is survived by two daughters, Jean D. (Donald) Miller, Jr., Superior, Joan L. Dahlberg, New Richmond, Wis.; one son, Gary L. Luoma, Superior; five grandchildren, Heidi Jo (Michael) Wherland, Bloomington, Minn., Matthew (Yovaly) Miller, Superior, Amy (Erik) Gilbertson, Burnsville, Minn., Christopher Dahlberg, Superior, Robert Dalberg, South Range; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Phyllis (Ron) Dall, Makinen, Minn.; one brother, Robert (Sye) Mannelin, Makinen, Minn.; one sister-in-law, Dolly Mannelin, Makinen, Minn. and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband Levi I. Luoma; her second husband, Eino J. Levanpa; one son, Don L. Luoma; one sister, Lorraine V. Tyykila; one brother, Raymond Mannelin and her parents.

Visitation will begin at 8:30 a.m. until the 10 a.m. funeral service on Saturday, Oct. 6 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church with Rev. Will Mowchan, officiating.

Burial will be at the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Cemetery in Maple.

Pallbearers for the service will be Sigrid's grandchildren and their spouses, Heidi and Michael Wherland, Christopher Dahlberg, Matthew and Yovaly Miller, Robert Dahlberg, Amy and Erik Gilbertson and a close family friend, Greg Peterson. Sigrid's great-grandchildren will be recognized as honorary pallbearers.
