Mary Lee Elm, co-host of the popular radio program "Catch As Catch Can" passed away Thursday, Sept. 6, 2012, at the age of 86.
Mary and her husband Roger Elm Sr. hosted the popular radio program for three decades on WWJC AM 850. The long running folksy radio program had a bit of everything in it, thus the name "Catch As Catch Can".
Mary Lee was born March 7, 1926 in Minneapolis, Minn., to the parents of John and Myrtle Murphy. Placed in an orphanage as an infant, Mary was adopted by Herbert and Myrabell Conway and grew up on Minnesota's Iron Range. She competed in swimming and music during high school winning many awards. Graduated from high school at the young age of 16, Mary entered nurses' training and became a nurse initially working in Moose Lake, Min. She met Roger Elm, an engineer and radio personality at WSBR in Superior. They fell in love, got married and began their life together on the family farm in South Range, where they raised four boys (Roger Jr., Ted, Richard and Ken) and one daughter (Myra).
Mary's compassion was legendary caring little for her personal comfort reflecting more concern for the care and support others. She found much joy in providing a house full of love, laughter, good-times and common sense, a house always with room for one more looking for friendship.
Her faith in God was paramount. Mary and Roger were instrumental in the building and operation of the Northlands first Christian radio station WWJC in 1963, until their retirement in 1998. Mary and Roger also established and pastored Northwoods Community Church in Solon Springs in 1974. She was a role model for many exhibiting a profound dedication to her family and her faith in God as well as a strong work ethic. Mary spent her last seven years as a resident of Golden Living Center in Superior where she shared love and friendship with fellow residents and staff.
Mary leaves behind a legacy including 15 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, and many friends. Mother Mary touched the hearts of many and will be missed by us all.
A memorial service for Mary Elm is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 1 p.m. at Great Lakes Church, 4501 Glenwood Street in Duluth. The service is open to the public.
In lieu of flowers the family has designated WWJC radio (not for profit ministry) for memorial contributions.

We lived in Poplar and knew Ted and Jackie and we would add that she was a wonderful woman of God and a great testimony to the love of our Lord Jesus Christ.
