John A. Messina

John A. Messina, 74, of Superior, died peacefully Sunday, Aug., 19, 2012, at Solvay Hospice House surrounded by his family.

John A. Messina, 74, of Superior, died peacefully Sunday, Aug., 19, 2012, at Solvay Hospice House surrounded by his family.

John was born in Abington, Pennsylvania on June 28, 1938, the son of Alfred and Mary Messina.

He served his country in the Air Force and had spent time in Korea.

John married the former Joan E. Fancher on Jan. 3, 1959, in the Holy Rosary Chapel, Duluth and they celebrated 53 years of marriage together.

He had worked at Northwest Outlet since 1965, and also had worked for KDAL-KDLH. He was a member and former state president of United Commercial Travelers and also a member of the Italian American Club, Belgium Club and the Superior Curling Club.

John was an avid golfer who had two holes-in -one and a double eagle at the Nemadji Golf Course. He also was an avid Notre Dame football and Phillies baseball fan, never missing watching their games. Most important to him was spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his, parents; a brother, Andrew; and a sister, Rose.

John is survived by his wife, Joan; children, Suzette (Karl) Ehresmann of Poplar, John W. (Jackie) Messina of Duluth and Patrick (Sherry) Messina of Superior; grandchildren, Nicole (John), Zachary, Joshua, Carissa and Matthew; great-grandchild, Rylan; brothers Alfred (Catherine) and Joseph of Pennsylvania; a special friend David Miller; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial mass will be held on Friday Aug. 24th at 11:30 a.m. at Holy Assumption Catholic Church. Rev. Ron Olson and Rev. Dean Buttrick will concelebrate. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. A celebration of life will follow mass at 1 p.m. at Vintage Italian Pizza in Superior. Military Honors will be accorded by the Richard I. Bong American Legion Post 435.

Honorary pallbearers will be his grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in John's name to the Solvay Hospice House, 801 Baylis Street, Duluth, MN 55811.

The family would like to give a special thank you to the caring staff at Solvay for their loving care of John.

I new John when he lived in Allouez. I would always see him at Smear day at the Belgium Club. He would always say hello to my father, Clovis. My prayers are with the family. Paul Lagae

Joan and Family, I am so very sorry to hear of John's passing. Just thinking of him puts a smile on my face. The girls loved him like a grandpa! You were wonderful neighbors, and we will never forget John. My prayers are sent to you. Terri Thomas Koskinen (Bickford)
