Donald R. Koivisto Sr., 64, a resident of Metairie, La., died on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at his son’s home in North Branch, Minn.

Donald R. Koivisto Sr., 64, a resident of Metairie, La., died on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at his son’s home in North Branch, Minn.

Donald Raymond Koivisto was born on Jan. 30, 1948, in Hibbing, Minn., to parents Raymond and Eleanor (Erickson) Koivisto. He and his family moved to Lake Nebagamon as a child where he lived until he enlisted in the US Army in 1966, where he served two tours in Vietnam until his discharge in 1969 at which point he served with the National Guard for an additional 20 years. On April 26, 1969, he was united in marriage to JoAnn Abel in Milwaukee. His work in various jobs took him to many areas of the Midwest, but for the past 12 years, he had been living in Metairie, La. Donald was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, VFW, Loyal Order of the Moose, Jaycees in St. Francis, MN, and the Eagles.

Donald is survived by his wife JoAnn of Bloomer, Wis., son Donald Jr. (Sarah) of North Branch, Minn., daughters Dawn Koivisto of Bloomer, Wis., Jennifer Lendabarker of Iron River; six grandchildren, Jack, Lexi, Abby, Morgan, Alex, Connor; one brother; five sisters; and many nephews and nieces.

Donald is preceded in death by his parents, and one brother.

Funeral services for Donald Koivisto Sr., will be held on Monday, August 13, 2012, at noon at the Dahl Funeral Home with Arnold Hoecherl officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday 11 a.m. to noon at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will follow at the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery near Spooner. JoAnn, Although I havn't seen you or your family since I was 15 years old, I remember you all well and have thought about you often. I am so sorry to hear of Don's death. You were excellent neighbors who were so kind to me and my family. Mary Mehtala-Wicklander
