Anton "Jim" James Vojacek, Jr., 88, of Iron River, Wis., passed away on Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, at St. Francis in the Park in Superior, after a brief illness.
Anton "Jim" James Vojacek, Jr., 88, of Iron River, Wis., passed away on Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, at St. Francis in the Park in Superior, after a brief illness.
He was born on April 5, 1924, the fifth child of Anton J. and Mary (Chramosta) Vojacek Sr. in Iron River, Wis., and was a lifelong resident of the town he loved. He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the Hanson and Maki Post 506 of the American Legion, and the V.F.W. Post 10197 of Iron River and served on the firing squad. Anton married Irene Washnieski on April 12, 1947. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. They had six children.
Anton worked for the Town of Iron River on road maintenance for a number of years and also for Bayfield Electric for 17 years as an equipment operator. In 1968, he started his own excavating, bulldozing, and trucking business which he operated up until his retirement in 1988. He served on the Town of Iron River Board for many years as Supervisor and Chairman, served on the Fire Department, ACME Northern Board of Directors, and the Iron River Co-op's Board of Directors. Anton loved to play "smear", hunt and fish, was a master of inventions, and was the greatest story teller his family ever knew. Children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren alike would sit and listen for hours to grandpa Jim's stories. He made many long and lasting friendships over the years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Diane, five siblings, Gladys Maki, Lillian Morey, Helen Holly, Charles Vojacek and Mary Antonson and many relatives.
He is survived by his wife Irene, a son, Jim (Sue) Vojacek, daughters Becky (Mark) Baillie, Renie (Jim) Granlund, Gail Polkoski, and Michelle (Greg) Wathke. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many relatives and friends.
He was a wonderful husband and father and taught us the importance of love, commitment and family. His family was everything to him and he will be deeply missed.
Out of respect for Jim's wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service.
