Edna Mae (Roe) Anderson

Edna Mae Roe was conceived in Norway and born in the United States. She was born on Feb. 25, 1922, in the midst of a massive snowstorm. The doctor had to come to the house for the delivery at 10th Street and Hammond Avenue in Superior.

She had one brother, Carl, who was 15 years older. Her parents were Norwegian immigrants. Her father worked as a lumberjack in Northern Wisconsin, and after his death, her mother worked for many years as a clerk at Newberry's Department Store.

Edna excelled in English and music at school, and hated history class. She loved to hike and roller skate. She graduated in 1940 from Central High School and attended Vocational School.

Along with two of her girlfriends, she played on a radio program for several years on KDAL in a trio called, "Three Girls and a Guitar." They were known for their 3-part harmony. At the age of 12 she began the role of pianist for The Salvation Army in Superior - a role which she continued until 2009.

Edna worked for five years at the office of Marine Supply before marrying Arthur J. Anderson. He was a World War II veteran and owned several businesses in Superior through the years. They had three daughters.

The family enjoyed summer outings at their cabin in Iron River and occasional camping. Edna continued her passion for music through jam sessions with friends and playing at church. She played accordion, guitar, mandolin, piano and organ.

After becoming a widow in 1981, Edna traveled with friends to Nashville, Tenn., Hawaii, Florida, Norway, Georgia, and Virginia. She became a member of the Busy Bodies, a Laurel and Hardy fan club in the Twin Ports. She enjoyed going to concerts, having picnics, participating in the church women's group, and visiting with friends. She contributed to her favorite causes, which included supporting the care of animals.

She spent the last few years at Villa Marina, still playing piano for other residents and for the Baptist services each Sunday.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Anderson.

She is survived by her three daughters, Linda (Jerry)Bartlett, Lindstrom, Minn., Carol Hudson, Fayetteville, Ark., Arlene Anderson, Duluth; three grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and two nieces, Leyla Tarlan, Bemidji, Minn., and Vickie Erickson, Minneapolis, Minn., as well as relatives in Norway.

There will be a celebration of her life on Thursday, June 21 at The Salvation Army, 916 Hughitt Ave., Superior. Visitation will be at 12 Noon with a service at 1 p.m. Refreshments to follow.

Edna's family would like to thank the staff at Villa Marina and Essentia Health for their excellent care and support. Memorials should be sent to The Salvation Army, Superior, or Animal Allies.
