Michael J. Culhane, 76, of Superior passed away peacefully on Friday, May 18, 2012.

Michael J. Culhane, 76, of Superior passed away peacefully on Friday, May 18, 2012, at Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center, Duluth, surrounded by family.

He was born Feb. 18, 1936, in Superior, son of Edward and Hazel (Rondo) Culhane.

Michael married Mary Alice Byrnes on July 20, 1957, in Superior.

His work history started as a baker for Eddie’s Bakery, but the majority of his life he worked as a blacksmith for the Abex Corporation, later known as ABC Rail.

He was a member of the Billings Park Civic Club, Douglas County Board of Supervisors, Boilermakers Union, Boy Scouts of America, and an inductee into the Superior Sports Hall of Fame.

His many interests included spending time with his family, golfing, bowling, walking, biking, coaching baseball and hockey, playing slow-pitch softball, and he was an excellent umpire for the slow-pitch softball league, reading, and later in life, riding his scooter “snoopervising” the neighborhood. He lived life to its fullest and had fun at every opportunity.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, William “Bill” Culhane; and sisters, Marilyn Johnson, Kathleen Stilinovich and Patricia Tomzak.

Survivors include his wife of more than 54 years, Mary Alice; daughters, Casey (John) Peterson, Colleen (Shane Hickok) Anderson, and Kelly (Scott) Killian, all of Superior; sons, Dan (Nancy Mitchell) Culhane, Minneapolis, Minn., Dennis (Christala) Culhane, Maple Grove, Minn., and Patrick (Karla) Culhane, Superior; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Evelyn Culhane, Brule; mother-in-law, Pharielda Byrnes; and many brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.

Michael’s celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 25 at the Billings Park Civic Club, 3903 N. 18th St., Superior. The family looks forward to hearing the many memories and stories that Mike’s friends have to share.

Honorary pallbearers will be Red McKenzie, Jerry Phillips, Bill Nord, Ray Flaherty, Ray Belanger, Norm Kunes, Butch Isackson, Leon Nord, Mike Fudally, John Hack, Bob Stein, Tom Flaherty, and Doug Flaherty.

Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th St., Superior, is assisting the family with arrangements.
