David F. Mertes, 74, of South Range, died Monday, April 16, 2012, at Villa-Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center, Superior.

David F. Mertes, 74, of South Range, died Monday, April 16, 2012, at Villa-Marina Health and Rehabilitation Center, Superior.

He was born June 23, 1937, in Green Bay, Wis., son of John Frank and Elva Mertes.

David worked over 30 years for Georgia-Pacific, retiring as a foreman.

Some of his interests included cats, coin collecting and watching western movies.

Preceding him in death were his parents; son, David Allen Mertes; daughter-in-law, Jean Mertes; and life-long partner, Sandie McConnell.

Survivors include his son, Dale Mertes, South Range; daughters, Cheryl Mertes, Superior, Leilanie "Lonnie" Mertes (Tom Sanford), Superior, and Tammy (Paul) Grammond, Foxboro; step-children, Terri Farmer and David McConnell, both of South Range; 11 grandchildren; sister, Marie Hertig, Anderson, S.C.; and special friends, Don and Mugs Anderson, South Range.

Visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. service, Friday, April 20, at Downs Funeral Home, 1617 N. 19th Street, Superior.

Committal prayers will be at Calvary Cemetery, Superior.

Following the cemetery service, the family invites everyone to a luncheon at the Kounty Kourthouse, Hwy. K, South Range.
