Margaret "Peggy" Rydberg, lifelong Superior resident, passed away Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, in her home surrounded by her family after a long, courageous battle with breast cancer. She was 52 years old.
Peggy was born April 14, 1959 to Alford and Albertine (Liberty) Johnson. Her mother passed away when she was three years old in a fatal car accident. Her father worked hard to raise her, along with her three siblings, the best he could. She always felt loved and safe growing up with him.
Peggy received her cosmetology license after high school and worked as a hair dresser for several years. She then went to Lake Superior College to complete the Health Unit Coordinator program and was employed at St. Luke's Hospital in Duluth for many years. After she left St. Luke's Hospital, she worked other various jobs as a HUC and hairdresser.
On Oct. 11, 1986 she married Michael N. Rydberg at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Superior. She was a loving wife and mother who instilled the values of hard work, kindness and generosity in her family.
Peggy loved to volunteer her time to help others as much as she could. She was a breast cancer activist and was on the leadership team of the Circle of Hope organization. She also volunteered at Essentia Health St. Mary's Hospital of Superior doing whatever she could to help out. She enjoyed spending time with her family, camping in Barnes, Wis., golfing, cooking, reading, going to concerts, traveling, bowling on the mixed doubles Candy Counter League at Village Lanes, riding her motorcycle and being a part of the Ramblin Rose's women's motorcycle group. In 2001 she also completed a marathon in Dublin, Ireland to support the Arthritis Foundation. She was a member of the Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, baptized April 23, 2011.
In addition to her husband Mike, Peggy is survived by two daughters, Kassie (Brady) Berkhof, Proctor, Ashley Rydberg, Superior; one granddaughter, Madeline Berkhof; one sister, LeeAnn (Perry) Sorenson, Ada, Minn.; two brothers, Patrick (Karen) Johnson, Superior, Kenneth (Nelda) Johnson, Terre Haute, Ind. and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16, in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home in Superior and will resume at 10 a.m., Friday, Feb. 17, at Lenroot-Maetzold until the 11 a.m. memorial service, with Jim Abbott officiating.
