John M. “Smitty” Smith Jr.

John M. “Smitty” Smith Jr., 84, Superior, died Wednesday, March 18, 2009, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth. He was born on Sept. 27, 1924, in Superior to John M. and Lena (Flemming) Smith Sr.

John M. “Smitty” Smith Jr., 84, Superior, died Wednesday, March 18, 2009, in St. Luke’s Hospital, Duluth. He was born on Sept. 27, 1924, in Superior to John M. and Lena (Flemming) Smith Sr.

He was a former member of the Belgian Club and the Douglas County Tavern League and he was the original owner of Smithy’s Bar in Allouez.

Smitty attended the former St. Anthony’s Catholic School and graduated from the former East High School.

He loved fishing on the Brule River, ice fishing on Lake Superior and he was a great friend to all.

Smitty is survived by one son, John (Angela) Smith III, Duluth; two sisters, Genevieve O’Toole, Maryland, Judy (Ryan) Markfelt, Minneapolis; one brother, Dennis (Elba) Smith, Columbia, S.C.; two grandchildren, Alyssa Smith and John Smith IV; his longtime companion, Donna Dzikonski, Superior; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Fred and Bill Smith.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. until the noon memorial service Tuesday, March 24 in the Lenroot-Maetzold Funeral Home. Pastor Dean Brown of Salem Covenant Church, Duluth, officiating.
