The beach at Thompson’s West End Park is just east of where the outlet for the City of Washburn wastewater treatment plant enters Chequamegon Bay in Lake Superior. For the past two years, the plant has been releasing partially treated water that is not up to the standards for treated wastewater as set by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. The beach has been closed several times over the past couple of years because of high levels of pollution in the water. (Clint Austin / caustin@duluthnews.com)
