Humor: Real artists don’t have time to listen to what critics say

One great thing about being a humor columnist and book reviewer is I get to laugh at myself. Long, long ago, back when Sandy Koufax decided to not pitch game one of the 1965 World Series because game day fell on Yom Kippur, me Pappy gave me a sage bit of advice that I’ve observed religiously ever since. “Son,” he said solemnly upon hearing the news, “whatever you do, don’t take the world seriously.”
