My one criticism of the mayor is that he would not take on the unions and get it so we can have more part time employees. When the council was discussing the rental inspection program, Mayor Ross stated he had plenty of people who could do apartment inspections from May to October and that means we have a lot of city employees we don't need until it is time for snow removal. Have you ever noticed that they sure burn a lot of fuel removing every snow bank in the city? There is plenty to cut and in my opinion he failed the tax payers. Also - I won't vote republican at the state level and I think there are a lot of people like me so he could potentially not even get the votes in his own city.

I've worked with Mayor Ross on a personal interest issue for the past three years, and traveled with his wife and him, I like him as a person. I agree with him on the getting rid of pay day loan scams (a.k.a. companies), they prey on poor people who need money when they are desperate. I don't agree with the 'no smoking' in bars, but um...I smoke. I don't agree with his personal politics other then that, but he is a good guy. And, whoever said his wife was faking her disability should meet her - she's not. I have a few friends who are wheelchair bound, and she's not faking!

The mayor's record on payday lending is that he is opposed to them. He has long lobbied, with great frustration, in Madison for regulation of the high-interest lenders. In May 2004, he was a proponent of an ordinance that stopped the spread of payday lenders in Superior. Most were open at the time he took office. The zoning code resulted in one of the businesses closing because it had opened in violation of the zoning code. Eight others were grandfathered in because the zoning ordinance went into effect after the businesses opened. Stories on payday lending can be found in the Duluth News Tribune archives. On rental property inspections, the council eliminated the program. At that time Dave Ross suggested the administration develop a program that would not result in a "growing government" but the council never took him up on the offer or directed him to do so. His initial opposition to the program was because he didn't want to expand government.

Kirk R., where exactly did you get the information on the Title/PayDay Loan places? I don't know when they opened, so I would like to find out, you seem to know for sure.

Kim J- The facts are that most of the Payday Loan and Title Loan places opened while Dave Ross has been Mayor of Superior. As for his stance on rental inspections you only need to search the Superior Telegram Archives to know that he is against them. So like I said in the beginning “it would be great to get rid of him and have a chance at getting a mayor who represents the citizens of superior.”

Kirk, I think you need to check your facts. You should find out the date that the last "pay day loan" business opened. You should also find out exactly what the Mayor's stance is on rental inspections. While he has been mayor, many dumps have been razed. The fact of the matter is, it takes time to implement change. Mayor Ross has done a lot to change Superior, for the better.

Kim J- You asked who I though he represented and I honestly don’t know, but given there are now 7 or 8 Payday loans places in Superior that charge about 300% interest it seems clear that his office supports these loan sharks. Also given there are a few landlords in Superior who rent a large number of properties in Superior that would not meet the minimum legal requirements of the state of Wisconsin if they were inspected. Although the past licensing requirements that require the inspection of all rental properties his office worked against the requirement leaving the few slum lords still renting units that do not meet the states minimum legal requirements. Since he clearly represents Slum Lords and Loan Sharks that pray on the citizens of Superior he is not representing them.
