“The girls were so excited to start a new season,” UWS coach Dan Laughlin said. “They were full of energy, you could tell in the first in second period. It was good to see them play for real, I was proud of their efforts.”
UWS took a 3-0 lead in the first period on one goal by Alexis Reid and two goals by Schultz.
DeKezel gave the Yellowjackets a 4-0 lead 47 seconds into the second period.
Chelsea Koehn scored Hamline’s goal when she put the puck over Peters’ shoulder on a breakaway 2:53 into the second period.
The Yellowjackets responded with Teschendorf’s goal 32 seconds later and Adair’s goal 19 seconds after that.
In all UWS scored eight goals in the second half to open up an 11-1 lead.
“That was a nice response for us,” Laughlin said. “You could tell after that goal they had a little bit of energy there for a shift, but we came right back. That was nice to see us rebound.”
Karen Larson scored the only goal of the third period on a power play with assists from Sheryl Kaskiw and Schultz.
The Yellowjackets and Pipers wrap up their series at 2 p.m. Saturday.
“We’re really pleased with the way we played all game,” Laughlin said. “On Saturday we’re just going to come out strong, play our game and just continue on.”
