The Douglas County Board meets tonight to consider its 2014 spending plan.
The plan comes with a 3.25 percent increase in the property tax levy, driven largely by borrowing to trim about 5 percentage points from debt owed the Wisconsin Retirement system. Last year, the board approved borrowing $6 million from the Wisconsin Board of Commissioners of public lands to eliminate the debt on pension benefits. This year the county begins paying back that loan
Had the county not acted, the liability would have remained at $2 million when the $6 million loan is paid in full in 20 years.
The board meets at 6 p.m. tonight in Room 201 of the Government Center to hear from the public before considering the 2014 budget.
