’Greens win home finale

MINONG -- The Northwood-Solon Springs football team ended the home portion of its season in style Friday, winning an exciting 62-40 game over the Birchwood Bobcats.
The win gives the Evergreens a 3-5 record as they head into their last game of the season at 6 p.m. Thursday at Luck.
“It was a lot closer than we hoped it would be to start the game, but we got it going,” said Evergreen coach Brian Amys. “I’m very happy for the seniors and very proud of them. They stuck with it and believed in the program, and we got a nice win for them tonight.”
Northwood-Solon Springs seniors playing their final home game were Daniel Gengenbach, Dennis St. Clair, Brandon Gokey, Josh Downs and Dominick King.
Before a large “Parents’ Night” crowd, junior running back Mason Barth made his return from a knee injury and finished the game with four touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Matt Benson had three touchdown passes and ran for two more scores.
The ’Greens opened the scoring after a Dustin Sohn fumble recovery when Barth ran 9 yards for a score.
With 4:35 left in the first quarter, Birchwood’s Tyler Marcinske went 25 yards for a TD. The run for two by Dylan Zettel was good to give Birchwood a 8-6 lead.
In the second quarter, and after another Sohn fumble recovery, Barth ran 35 yards to regain the lead for Northwood-Solon Springs. On the next possession, Benson went to the air and fired a perfect strike to Daniel Gengenbach for a 20-yard touchdown. Walker Grenier ran in the two-point conversion, and it was 20-8 for the Evergreens.
The final touchdown of the half was on a spectacular play. With the ball on the 39, the snap from center went over Benson’s head. He hustled back all the way to the 25 to get the ball and then, just as he was being tackled, he lateralled to Barth who proceeded to zig-zag his way past all of the Bobcats and into the end zone for a touchdown.
Another Benson touchdown pass to Gengenbach and a Benson 10-yard TD made it 42-8 going into the fourth.
The fourth quarter was wild with seven touchdowns scored. A Birchwood touchdown by Cody Cimfl was followed by a Benson kick return for a touchdown. With the Evergreen reserves in, Birchwood got two quick TDs from Marcinske and Joe Chucka. Northwood was forced to put the starters back in, and on the first play, Benson threw 55 yards to Sohn for a touchdown.
A late Birchwood touchdown by Chucka was followed by a Barth kick return for a touchdown as the final gun went off.
The Evergreens got a key interception from Brady Vig during the game, and Kacey Block had a fumble recovery.
Lineman Ethan Luedtke had to leave the game with an injury, but he it is hopeful he will return for the Luck game on Thursday.
