Northwestern spikers go 1-3; football team loses to Chetek, 35-3
The Northwestern High School volleyball team went 1-3 on the first day of the Heart O’ North Conference Tournament Saturday in the NHS gym in Maple.
The Tigers defeated Chetek 2-0 (25-9, 25-12), but lost to Bloomer 2-0 (25-19, 25-8), Ladysmith 2-1 (26-28, 25-15, 16-14) and Barron 2-0 (25-18, 25-14).
On the day the Tigers were led by Erin Gotelaere, 18 kills and 17 digs; Lexi Janigo, 16 kills, 21 digs and 11 service aces; Cheyenne Johnson, 13 kills; and Daisy Mack, 43 set assists.
The Tigers (3-8) will wrap up play in the HON tournament at 5:45 p.m. Thursday.
TIGER TALES: In an earlier unreported match, Northwestern defeated Chetek 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-20). Gotelaere had five kills and seven digs; Johnson had 10 kills and four aces; Janigo had six kills, four ace serves and six digs; Hailey Eller had five ace serves; Sara Garland had three ace serves and eight digs; and Taya McClure had three ace serves.
The NHS football team lost to Chetek 35-3 Friday night at Tiger Stadium in Maple.
The Tigers’ only points came on Jordan Orme’s 37-yard field goal in the first quarter.
Northwestern (4-4 overall, 2-4 in the HON) is still mathematically alive for a WIAA playoff berth, but must defeat Bloomer at home Friday night.
The Blackhawks are currently 7-1 overall and undefeated in the HON at 6-0.
Chetek outgained Northwestern 401-145 in total yards, including 290-145 rushing and 111-0 passing.
Micah Goetsch led the Tigers in rushing with 79 yards on 18 carries. Nate Pearson added 68 yards on 20 carries, returned three punts for 111 yards and returned four kick offs for 64 yards.
Chetek is now 7-1 overall and 5-1 in the Heart O’ North Conference.
