The Northwestern Tigers are in a must-win situation today, but they’ll be hard-pressed against a Chetek defense that has been the best in the conference.
Northwestern (4-3, 2-3) must win both of its remaining Heart O’ North Conference games to automatically qualify for the playoffs. Chetek-Weyerhaeuser (6-1, 4-1), qualified for the playoffs last week with a 34-6 victory over Hayward.
“We have our hands full the next two weeks,” said Dennis Scherz, head coach of the Tigers.
“We need to beat two good teams. On the road to Chetek is going to be a tall task, but we’ll show up and fight.”
The Bulldogs have held opponents to an average of just 5.7 points per game. With four linemen over 6 feet and 200 pounds, Chetek’s starting line has been a major roadblock for opponents.
On offense Chetek has averaged 29.6 points. Jake Schofield is Chetek’s quarterback, with 539 yards in seven games. Walker Olson has been Schofield’s main target with 16 receptions for 269 yards.
On the ground, Jonny Chamberlain leads the Bulldogs, followed by Travis Monnier
The Tigers have struggled on offense recently, causing their season average to drop to 24 points per game. Since losing center Elias Alexandrou with a broken wrist, Northwestern has managed just one touchdown.
On defense, the Tigers have also seen a drop-off, giving up 22.9 per game.
