UW-Superior's Linzmeier is named preseason all-American
University of Wisconsin-Superior guard Sally Linzmeier, a junior from Valders, Wis., has been designated as a preseason All-American by Women’s DIII News, a national publication dedicated to NCAA Division III women’s basketball .
Linzmeier was one of 24 players selected from the eight regions nationwide honored in the October 2013 issue.
Last season, Linzmeier rebounded from a serious knee injury as a freshman to put herself in the conversation as the WIAC Player of the Year. Appearing in all 27 games, she led the Yellowjackets in scoring, putting up 447 points (16.6 per game), rebounds (188) and steals (90). She was an All-WIAC First Team selection and was named to the WIAC All-Defensive Team for the second time in as many seasons.
“I obviously have a very heavy bias, but in my opinion she was one of the top players, not just in our conference but in the nation last year as a sophomore and is only getting better,” UWS coach Don Mulhern said.
Linzmeier has 688 points for her career and should break into the top-15 all-time during her junior season. She is also on pace to break into the top-15 on the all-time rebounding list. Linzmeier sits sixth on the all-time steals list with 155 and is projected to shatter the school record in that department.
This past summer Linzmeier was part of the American team that competed in the 2013 Division III Brazil Tour. The Americans went 2-2 in the event.
The Yellowjackets begin practice Tuesday, and their first game of the season is an exhibition at Concordia-St. Paul on Oct. 31.
