Superior High School senior Hailey Kontny announced Thursday that she has committed to play basketball for the University of Minnesota Duluth.
“After visiting there and meeting the players, I knew it was the right place for me,” Kontny said. “I have visited and had offers from several Division I and II programs throughout the country, and I am very grateful for those opportunities, but there is something special about UMD and the pride behind being a Bulldog.”
Kontny averaged 15.8 points per game last season for Superior as the team’s point guard. She led the Spartans in assists with 4.8 per game and is currently third on Superior’s all-time scoring list with 1,156 career points.
Sarah Haasis (Matson), who played for the Bulldogs from 1996-98, is the only other girls basketball player from Superior to letter for UMD, according to the UMD athletics website.
Lori Ogren, of Port Wing, played in 1981-84 and 1985-86, and Sandy Slade, of Solon Springs, played in 1982-83.
“Being able to play for such a great program that is right in my backyard is a dream come true, and I am so happy that my family and friends will be able to come and watch us play,” Kontny said. “UMD has always had a rich tradition of excellence and I can’t wait to be part of that.
“I want to thank my parents for all the sacrifices they have made over the years taking me all over the country to play. Without their support none of this would have been possible.”
