SPARTAN RDP: Volleyball team holds off Rice LakeSeason ends for golf team, soccer team falls to Denfeld
The Superior High School volleyball team won a back-and-forth match with the Rice Lake Warriors 3-2 Thursday night in the SHS gym.
Rice Lake won the opening game 25-16 and Superior won the next two games 25-20 and 25-17. The Warriors tied the match up with a 25-19 win in game four and the Spartan clinched the match with a 15-11 win in game five.
The win improves the Spartans to 12-11 on the season.
The Spartans led 3-2 early in game one, but Rice Lake put together a 13-0 run for a 15-3 lead. Doing much of the damage for the Warriors was Rachel Goettl, who had at least a handful of ace serves dur ing the run.
The Spartans outscored the Warriors 13-10 the rest of the game, but it wasn’t enough as Rice Lake won 25-16.
Superior used the momentum from the end of game one to win game two 25-20. The Spartans led 20-12 and later 24-20 when Rachel Fregin’s tip provided the winning point.
With the score tied 15-15 in game three, the Spartans outscored the Warriors 10-2 the rest of the way for a 25-17 win. The final two points came on Taylor Nelson kills.
Rice Lake evened the match at 2-2 by winning game three 25-19.
The fifth match was the most even of the night with ties at 2, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 10 before the Spartans scored five of the last six points to pull out the victory.
The Spartans play again at 7 p.m. Monday at Cloquet.

The season ended for the Superior girls golf team Wednesday with a seventh-place finish in the Division 1 WIAA regional tournament at the New Richmond Golf Course.
Eau Claire North won the team title with a 347. The Spartans finished with a score of 460.
ECN’s Alex Wheeler was the meet medalist with a 78.
For Superior, Allie Shober led the way with a 112. Amanda Hinaus was next with a 114, followed by Samantha Aune, 116; and Hailey Gronquist, 118.

The SHS boys soccer team lost to Duluth Denfeld 3-1 Tuesday night at Public Schools Stadium in Duluth.
Junior Derek Copperud scored for the Spartans in the 72nd minute, and freshman Sam Kline finished with 27 saves.
Ben Scrignoli scored twice and Trevor Otteson once for the Hunters.
The Spartans also went 0-2 in the Lakeland Tournament Saturday in Minocqua.
Superior lost to Kingford, Mich., 4-1, and to Lakeland, 4-0.
Sophomore Kade Walpole scored the Spartans’ goal against Kingford.
The Spartans, who lost to Ashland 11-0 Thursday, host Rice Lake at 11 a.m. Saturday and Spooner at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
SPARTAN SPIN: The Spartans are the No. 8 seed for WIAA playoffs and will play at No. 1 Eau Claire Memorial at 4 p.m. on Oct. 15.
