Duane Gale Zunker 62, of Superior died peacefully Friday, Sept. 27 at Bethesda Hospital in St. Paul, Minn., after an 11 month battle with heart disease.
He was born July 23, 1951, to Arnold and Evelyn (Voigt) Zunker in Wausau, Wis. Duane grew up in Solon Springs and graduated from St. Croix High School in 1970. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 42 years as a conductor. When not on the road as a conductor his passion was hunting and fishing with his son, Jason, family and friends. He also enjoyed cooking and spending time with his family and friends as much as possible. He was fun loving, had a wonderful personality and left a smile on the face of everyone he met.
He is preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother Jerry Zunker, a sister Kathy (Zunker) Essen and his son, Chippewa County, Wis. Deputy Jason Scott Zunker who passed away in the line of duty on Jan. 5, 2008.
He is survived and terribly missed by his brothers; Donald (Karen) Zunker of Weston, Wis., Robert (Josefine) Zunker of Tacoma, Wash., Eugene (Josephine) Zunker of Buckeye, Ariz., Thomas (Linda) Zunker of Wausau, Wis., John (Rebecca) Zunker of Superior, Wis., Dennis (Lori) Zunker of Wausau, Wis. and his sisters; Shirley (Clarence) Bargender of Edgar, Wis., Mary (Jim) Martorano of Superior, Wis., Sue (John) Johnson of Superior, Wis., Elaine (Kent) Schroeder of Poplar, Wis., Cynthia (Mike) Clark of Mosinee, Wis., Peggy (Jayme) Gajewski of Wausau Wis., and Bonnie (Mike) Stout of Ingleside, Ill., and his daughter in-law Lisa (Johnson) Zunker, and several nieces and nephews.
Please join us for a celebration of his life 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 12, at Mission Covenant Church, 5145 S. County Rd P, in Poplar, Wis.
