The congregation of Concordia Lutheran Church announced the arrival of its new pastor, Ashley Nicolls.
An installation service for the Hibbing native and University of Wisconsin-Superior alum is held Thursday at the church, 1708 John Ave.
A light supper and reception runs 5-6:15 p.m. in the fellowship hall, followed by a service at 6:30 p.m. with a sermon by Rev. Greg Kauffman, followed by cake and coffee served in the church library.
The new pastor grew up in Hibbing, Minn. as an active member of her home congregation of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
In 2000, Nicolls graduated Hibbing High School where she played hockey, soccer and fast-pitch softball. During summer months, she traveled around the United States and Canada playing women’s baseball.
Nicolls attended the University of Wisconsin-Superior on a full tuition academic scholarship, where she played hockey, soccer, fast-pitch softball and was active in campus ministry. She received a bachelor’s degree in mass communications with a broadcast journalism emphasis and a minor in women’s sports.
While at UWS, Nicolls worshipped at several local churches, including Concordia Lutheran Church. The members of Concordia financially supported her spring break trip down to Florida to evangelize on the beaches with Campus Crusade for Churst. It was during that trip when she decided to become a pastor in the ELCA. Nicolls attended Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, Iowa. She did a one-year internship at Trinity Lutheran Church in Laramie, Wyo. She graduated with her Masters of Divinity degree in 2007. The first congregation Nicolls served was in Florida, where she was an associate pastor for five years.
Nicolls said she is glad to be back in the Northland and looks forward to being involved in the community and college. In her spare time, Nicolls is a Minnesota Twins fan and enjoys working out, and watching TV and movies.
