The body of a 69-year-old Wisconsin man was recovered from Lake Namekagon Sunday afternoon. Gerald (Jerry) Buss of Cottage Grove was fishing from a boat with a friend when he fell into the lake on Friday, according to a release from the Bayfield County Sheriff’s Office. A seat cushion was thrown to him, but he was unable to maintain his grip on it. He was not wearing a personal floatation device. His friend immediately signaled other fishermen and called 911 for help. Initial rescue and search attempts shortly after the call did not result in locating Buss. The search continued Saturday and Sunday. At approximately 12:15 p.m. Sunday, Buss’ body was recovered in about 10 feet of water in the lake with the assistance of members of the Namekagon Fire Department, Great Divide Ambulance Service, Sawyer County Dive team, Wisconsin DNR and two K9 Emergency Response Team water scent dogs
The Bayfield County coroner has determined this to be an accidental cold water drowning.
