Senior midfielder Ben Royce’s unassisted goal at 61:26 proved to be the game-winner as the Yellowjackets’ men’s soccer team defeated Bethel University 1-0 in a nonconference match Tuesday evening in Arden Hills, Minn.
Matt Elder made three saves to earn the shutout for the Yellowjackets (4-4-1), while Chris Scott made eight saves for Bethel (3-4).
UWS is off until 7 p.m. Saturday when it plays a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match at UW-Oshkosh.
Brooke Vonasek had 12 kills and Keely Deadrick 22 set assists as UWS swept Northland College in a nonconference match Wednesday night at Ashland.
The Yellowjackets won 25-17, 25-5, 25-14 to improve to 11-5 overall. The Lumberjills fell to 1-12.
Offensively, the Yellowjackets had great night with an attack percentage of .434, had 41 total digs and made only five attacking errors the entire match.
Kitty Tynen added eight kills, followed by Alissa Autio and Deadrick with four each. Vonasek and Tynen were both perfect on the attack and finished with attack percentages of .667 and .400. As a team the Yellowjackets committed just three errors on the attack.
Mikayla Bock chipped in with eight set assists and Lauren Peterson had four service aces and Bock had three.
On defense, Deadrick, Tynen and Peterson tied for the team lead with eight digs, while Vonasek had three blocks.
The Yellowjackets will host a triangle today at Mertz Mortorelli Gym. The Yellowjackets will host Lakehead University of Thunder Bay at 4 p.m. and Finlandia at 7 p.m. The middle match is Lakeland vs. Finlandia.
UWS also hosts Crown College at 4:15 p.m. Saturday.
For the sixth straight season, UWS and WIAC volleyball teams will participate in promotions to support Breast Cancer Awareness.
Each of the nine WIAC teams will be involved in at least one promotional event throughout the month of October. Various promotional activities will take place at each match to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research. Spectators are encouraged to wear pink clothing in support of all those affected by breast cancer.
Over the past five seasons, conference volleyball programs have raised an amazing $113,037 in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. The Yellowjackets’ special event is Oct. 4 when they host UW-La Crosse.
Alumni softball game
The Yellowjackets softball program will hold an alumni game at noon Saturday at Liebaert Field. The team will host a barbeque at the field after the game.
All former players, along with their friends and families are invited to come and be a part of the festivities.
