Goodwill stores in north central Wisconsin will have costume consultants on staff for the first time this Halloween.
There will be two costume consultants on duty starting the weekend of Oct. 11 at 24 Goodwill stores from Green Bay to Wausau to La Crosse.
Vice president of marketing Pilar McDermott says the resale shops are a good place to find affordable costumes.
“It's a treasure chest, and you'll never know what you'll find,” she says. “I was in the store, and there was a shearling jacket, like the Marlboro Man wears? It was in with our Halloween items. It was nineteen dollars.”
McDermott says the consultants are current Goodwill staffers who volunteered for the new assignments. She says they’re people who are creative and who “love theater.”
“You and I might look at a set of scrubs and think, 'I'm going to dress up as a doctor', and they might come up with, 'Well, why don't you be a veterinarian and have a couple of stuffed animals with you?',” says McDermott.
The resale shops have long been frequented in hard times by those with limited budgets. McDermott says even the poorest shoppers will be able to walk away with a one-of-a-kind costume. “If somebody really is in a tremendous need, we make sure that they get a gift certificate because we want everybody to come into our stores and feel special.”
The new costume consultants will be on duty on weekends only in Goodwill stores in the North Central Wisconsin region.
