For the first time ever an international hot air balloon festival will land in Bayfront Park in Duluth this weekend.
The festival kicks off today and runs through Sunday.
The Duluth Airshow in conjunction with St. Luke’s Hospital is proud to announce the arrival of a Le Festival des Montgolfières à Duluth, aka, “Duluth Hot Air Balloon Festival.”
Along with hot air balloons, the event will feature many education related activities including launching of weather balloons, a moon glow event, vendors, food, live music, hands on activities for families, and a craft brew village.
Not only is this the first time in 120 years that balloons will ascended out of Duluth, it is also unique in that it is a free community event.
There will be a dozen hot air balloons over the course of the three-day festival, there will be tethered hot air balloon rides, a grand launch over Duluth, weather permitting and tons of free family activities including a Kite Flying event where the local Kiwanis Club will hand out thousands of kites to children to fly in the park. Live music will be on stage all day Saturday and a Craft Brew Village also will be open all three days of the event.
Area middle schools from Duluth and as far away as Hibbing will also be launching a series of weather balloons complete with Go Pro HD cameras, GPS satellite tracking equipment and experiments run by the students. Launches take place each day during the festival made possible by St. Louis County.
