Spartans put undefeated record on line at River Falls

The Superior High School football team will attempt to improve to 4-0 for the first time since the Spartans’ state championship season in 1990 when it plays at River Falls at 7 p.m. today.
The Spartans improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big Rivers Conference with a 35-7 win over Eau Claire Memorial last Friday at Ole Haugsrud Field.
Superior has outscored its three opponents 144-25 this season, including 76-0 in the first quarter.
River Falls enters the contest with records of 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the BRC. The Wildcats are coming off a 46-14 loss to Eau Claire North (1-2, 1-0) in which they turned the ball over four times.
The Tiges opened the season with a 26-13 win over New Richmond and a 30-20 loss to Farmington, Minn.
Sophomore James Witt has taken over at quarterback for River Falls and in two games had completed 12-of-26 passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns.
Both TD passes came last week, 4 yards to Jackson Vanderwagon and 39 yards to Kenny Oberlin.
As for the Spartans, they received five votes and are honorable mention in this week’s AP State Football Poll.
They are led on offense by junior quarterback Nick Mehlem, who is 36-of-46 for 622 yards and eight touchdowns.
His main targets are Addison Schwarz and Jake Libal with 181 and 104 yards, respectively. Schwarz has nine catches, three for scores, and Libal has five catches, including four last week. Carter Anderson also has five catches for 70 yards and two touchdowns.
Aaron Wakefield-Zubiate is Superior’s main threat on the ground with 153 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Mehlem is second in rushing with 116 yards, with includes a 61-yard scoring jaunt in last week’s win over ECM.
Ross Kennelly and Willie Stream lead the Spartans with 19 tackles apiece. Stream’s numbers include six sacks and four tackles for losses.
