Animal Allies Humane Society announced today that the organization has been awarded a $5,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to host a one-day Mega Adoptathon event featuring nine adoption and rescue organizations from across the region. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday at the Duluth Petco store located on West Central Entrance near the Miller Hill Mall.
The Petco Foundation grant will be used to host and promote area rescue groups and adoption centers from across the Twin Ports region. The shelters include: Animal Allies Humane Society of Duluth; Animal Allies Humane Society of Superior; Humane Society of Douglas County; Lake County Humane Society & Animal Shelter of Two Harbors; Mesabi Humane Society of Virginia; and Precious Paws Humane of Chisholm. Rescue groups include: MN Pitbull Rescue, RAGOM (Retrieve a Golden of Minnesota), and Greyhound Pets of America. All animals will be altered, microchipped and vaccinated prior to adoption. All Animal Allies’ cats will be available for no fee, and dogs will have a $50 discount on their adoption fee.
Northland Spay/Neuter will also be offering microchips and registration for cats and dogs at a discounted rate of $20 that day only from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. PETCO venders will be on hand and the store’s groomer and trainer will be available to answer questions.
“We anticipate a huge selection of over 125 wonderful cats and dogs on hand and available for adoption that day,” said Sarah Ojard, Animal Allies adoption program manager. “Come up, see the animals and talk with the staff and volunteers to learn about the good work the organizations do for our area communities. Maybe you’ll find your new best buddy.”
The Petco Foundation has served as a voice for companion animals across the country since 1999. Today, with more than 8,000 local animal-welfare partners across the country, the Petco Foundation donates approximately $15 million a year to make a difference in the lives of millions of animals. The organization is funded through donations raised during fundraisers conducted in Petco’s more than 1,200 stores across the country, as well as from Petco associates, vendors and corporate contributions. Money raised helps fund animal-welfare organizations, spay and neuter efforts, animal-assisted therapy programs and humane education. The majority of the funds raised remain in the communities where they were raised, and the Petco Foundation is also involved in many national animal-welfare efforts.
