The Northwestern High School girls golf team entered play Thursday with a 6-0 record in the Heart O’ North Conference.
The Tigers added one more point to their record with a win over Superior but fell to Spooner to suffer their first conference loss of the season Thursday at Nemadji Golf Course.
“We had a beautiful day for golf,” said NHS coach Steve High.
Northwestern finished four strokes back from Spooner with a 196. The Spartans came in with a 234.
The loss drops Northwestern to 7-1 and puts them in contention for the conference lead with Hayward and Spooner.
“I think we all have one loss in the conference now,” High said.
Meet medalist honors went to Northwestern’s Molly Lattery, who carded a 41. Lyndi Graff added a 51 for the Tigers, and Marissa Delvas and Macy Meteraud both finished with 52s.
Northwestern sophomore Cora Jarman also had a strong outing, shooting the first par of her high school career.
Samantha Aune led the Spartans with a 50. Allie Shober shot a 60, and Amanda Hinaus and Hailey Gronquist shot 62s.
On Aug. 30, the Tigers picked up a pair of conference victories in Barron. Northwestern finished with a team score of 196 to win the meet, followed by Cumberland with a 232. Barron did not have enough players to register a team score.
“They currently had three players, but they picked up one more so that will be good for them,” High said. “They will be able to have a team score in the future.”
Northwestern senior Lattery was the meet medalist with a 45.
“It was nice to see Molly in front,” High said. “She’s kind of our designated leader by default.”
Barron’s Karia Severude was second with a 48, and Reggie Semanko carded a 49 for the Tigers to take third. Rounding out Northwestern’s scoring were Graff and Delvas, who both finished with 51s.
The Tigers are back in action Monday at Hayward with Chetek. The Spartans play at Luck Monday.
